  • A look back at 2002 - Time for reflection

With 2002 being a particularly tough year financially for many companies, Sure Communication continued to work with our clients to ensure that they maximised the return on investment from their online projects.

We were delighted that most of our clients' visitor numbers showed a marked increase over the previous year proving that a combination of improved website design and content management together with a concentrated on-line marketing campaign can reap rewards.

2002 was undoubtedly the year when broadband finally came to town. With Tony Blair's announced vision of a 'Broadband Britain' and a push from last quarter advertising, the UK now has the fastest broadband growth rate in Europe. Encouraged by recent figures that 34 Million UK Internet users were now on-line confirmed further growth and acceptance that the Web has its place. The estimated global Internet population is now beyond 665 Million according to eTForecasts.

Our wish for 2003 is that broadband availability and take up continues to grow, together with improved wireless and mobile connectivity such as Bluetooth/3G & GPRS access, as it is crucial to the continued success of web services.

Below is a summary of the key products & services available to make your on-line presence more profitable. We wish you all a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous 2003!

  • Search engine news - New announcements

Two new product oriented search services to the web have recently been announced. Ask Jeeves have signed a partnership with comparative shopping site PriceGrabber.com to create an Ask.com branded shopping service focusing on entertainment and business related product offerings.

Google have also launched a new search feature dubbed "Froogle" and designed to function as a searchable index of product information from a wide range of on-line stores. These new shopping services borrow popular features like price comparison and topical product listings from their predecessors, whilst seeking to add their own style and uniqueness to product searches.

Ensure you increase traffic to your website www.sur.co.uk/webpositioning & www.sur.co.uk/ppc

  • IT/Internet legal issues - The Data Protection Act

The Data Protection Act 1998 came into force on 1 March 2000 but many companies are still unaware of its implications. It regulates the holding and processing of personal data, that is information relating to living individuals, which is held either on computer or in some cases in manual form.

Anyone processing personal data must comply with the eight enforceable principles of good practice. If you hold any information on individuals and need to check that you are complying with the law, then comprehensive information can be found at www.dataprotection.gov.uk

  • Latest virus news - Keep vigilant and safeguard your business in 2003

2002 has seen many damaging viruses (and hoaxes) disrupting business and wasting time and money! However, if you keep your anti-virus software up to date, install and maintain an updated firewall, and constantly patch your software, you can safeguard yourselves (go to Microsoft's Windows update site and apply the patches). Of course, you should never open executable attachments if you're not entirely sure of the contents and businesses should block executable attachments anyway.
