Twitter

Continuing from last month's article about social media marketing, a new report researched by the Aberdeen Group found that 61% of firms have worked to engage with customers in online communities. The firm claims that successful organisations need to integrate social media marketing alongside other campaign tactics.

Jeff Zabin, analyst for Aberdeen, said firms adopting these tactics could be up to "87 times more likely to see higher returns on marketing performance". Mr Zabin stated: "Social media can be an affordable way to drive increased visibility and to drive customer engagement, but it doesn't happen in a vacuum."

This month we look specifically at Twitter - Recent research by Nielsen Online found that Twitter has evolved into an "important component of brand marketing".

However, despite previous suggestions that the channel is becoming popular with marketing firms, research by WebTrends found that only two per cent of UK companies are currently integrating Twitter into their marketing mix.

According to Nielsen Online, at the end of March 09 the number of unique visitors to Twitter rose by 1,382 per cent year-on-year. So why aren't businesses' making the most of it's potential?

Generally, most businesses don't know how to utilise it in the most appropriate manner, thinking that it's not a relevant medium for them. Twitter is all about creating and maintaining relationships, creating a dialogue, in other words, marketing yourself. It is time consuming, no doubt, but it is free.

If you don't want to create original posts you can direct your followers to news articles, videos, or websites that are of interest to you or your industry. People will follow those whose thoughts they are interested in hearing, whose links they are interested in sharing and whose company's they are interested in staying informed about.

True, you might not want to be sharing what you had for breakfast every day, but for a marketing channel that's free to use and has a massive audience, it may be worth the time and effort to sign up and start twittering although the 'jury is out'. If you do decide to give it a try, remember, place a twitter widget on your website so visitors know that you "tweet".

Major Software and Hardware maintainance was undertaken during the first two weeks in May, which meant our server was taken down a small number of times for a period totalling approximately an hour with a maximum downtime limited to 40 mins.

On the evening of Saturday 25th April our Post Code look-up service suffered an interuption that was fixed on the morning of Monday 27th April.
